This thesis proposes to explore science fiction in both literature and film. Its central hypothesis is located in the possibility of studying science fiction as a genre in both modes of expression. This necessarily requires the investigation of the history of science fiction in both film and literature, as well as the analysis and confrontation of the following issues: the various theories arising from the concept of genre itself; the differences between film genres and literary genres; the differences and similarities between science fiction and contiguous genres, such as the fantastic, the marvellous, and realism; the most important theoretical studies dedicated explicitly and specifically to science fiction; the various definitions of science fiction; the most relevant characteristics of this genre.
