5 p, 370.8 KB As right as rain : deciphering drought-related metabolic flexibility in the C-CAM Portulaca / Reyna-Llorens, Ivan (Centre de Recerca en Agrigenòmica) ; Aubry, Sylvain (University of Zürich. Department of Plant and Microbial Biology)
Optimization of carbon and water usage in plants is a widespread strategy to survive in hot and dry environments. Based on the ancestral C3 photosynthesis, two major carbon -concentrating mechanisms (CCMs) evolved, allowing spatial (C4) or temporal (Crassulacean acid metabolism, CAM) segregation of carbon-fixing activities. Institut de Ciència i Tecnologia Ambientals)
Walking is the most accessible form for seniors to engage in daily light or moderate physical activity. Walking activity depends on both individual and environmental factors, the latter including how walkable a given setting is. [...]

36 p, 713.4 KB Acid rain mediated nitrogen and sulfur deposition alters soil nitrogen, phosphorus and carbon fractions in a subtropical paddy / Wang, Chun (Fujian Normal University. Institute of Geography) ; Fang, Yunying (Elizabeth Macarthur Agricultural Institute) ; An, Wanli (Fujian Normal University. Institute of Geography) ; Zeng, Congsheng (Fujian Normal University. Institute of Geography) ; Wang, Weiqi (Fujian Normal University. Institute of Geography) ; Sardans i Galobart, Jordi (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals) ; Fernández-Martínez, Marcos (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals) ; Peñuelas, Josep (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals)
Agricultural ecosystems are globally important sinks of carbon and other nutrient elements. In China, acid rain events affect about 0. 62 million km², representing about 6. 4% of total land area; however, the impacts of acid rain mediated nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S) depositions on soil organic carbon (SOC) fractions and nutrient stocks in paddy soils and implications for yield production under climate change are unclear. 38 p, 460.1 KB Effect of simulated acid rain on CO₂, CH₄ and N₂O fluxes and rice productivity in a subtropical Chinese paddy field / Wang, Chun (Fujian Normal University. Institute of Geography) ; Wang, Weiqi (Fujian Normal University. Institute of Geography) ; Sardans i Galobart, Jordi (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals) ; An, Wanli (Fujian Normal University. Institute of Geography) ; Zeng, Congsheng (Fujian Normal University. Institute of Geography) ; Abid, Abbas Ali (Zhejiang University. Zhejiang Provincial Key Laboratory of Agricultural Resources and Environment) ; Peñuelas, Josep (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals)
The need of more food production, an increase in acidic deposition and the large capacity of paddy to emit greenhouse gases all coincide in several areas of China. Studying the effects of acid rain on the emission of greenhouse gases and the productivity of rice paddies are thus important, because these effects are currently unknown. [...]

17 p, 1.1 MB Universality of rain event size distributions / Peters, Ole (Imperial College London. Department of Mathematics) ; Deluca Silberberg, Anna (Centre de Recerca Matemàtica) ; Corral, Álvaro (Centre de Recerca Matemàtica) ; Neelin, J. David (University of California. Institute for Geophysics and Planetary Physics) ; Holloway, Christopher E. (University of Reading. Department of Meteorology) ; Centre de Recerca Matemàtica
We compare rain event size distributions derived from measurements in climatically different regions, which we find to be well approximated by power laws of similar exponents over broad ranges. Differences can be seen in the large-scale cutoffs of the distributions. [...]

22 p, 1.1 MB Power laws and scaling of rain events and dry spells in the Catalonia region / Deluca Silberberg, Anna (Centre de Recerca Matemàtica) ; Corral, Álvaro (Centre de Recerca Matemàtica) ; Centre de Recerca Matemàtica
We analyze the statistics of rain-event sizes, rain-event durations, and dry-spell durations in a network of 20 rain gauges scattered in an area situated close to the NW Mediterranean coast. Power-law distributions emerge clearly for the dryspell durations, with an exponent around 1. [...]
