Teresa (Maria Teresa) (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona) ; Tubau Muntaña, Susagna (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona)
In this paper, by focussing on the behaviour of polarity elements from a variety of languages from different language families (namely, Basque, Hindi, English, Romanian, Spanish, Greek, Czech, and Russian) we investigate the relationship between Polarity Sensitive Items (PSIs) and Negative Polarity Items (NPIs) on the one hand, and between PSIs and Negative Concord items (NCIs) on the other. Department of Language and Culture) ; Tubau Muntaña, Susagna (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Filologia Anglesa i de Germanística)
This study examines the extent to which extra-linguistic factors such as language dominance, order of acquisition and language of instruction are deterministic for multilingual transfer selection and subsequent development. [...]

15 p, 71.4 KB Early Catalan OV Sequences : Empirical Evidence for the Poverty of Stimulus Argument / Tubau Muntaña, Susagna (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona)
After all the criticism Pullum and Scholz (2002a) have received, the best way of contributing something new to the debate of the Poverty of Stimulus (POS) argument and linguistic nativism was to discuss some empirical evidence of the kind these authors claim to be missing in the generative literature. Child language acquisition in foreign language contexts with limited exposure is often a slow process where initial stages of development last longer than in L2 contexts or in adult learners. Exploring this context may provide insights into the nature of the acquisition process and how it is reflected in the data. [...]
La adquisición infantil del lenguaje en contextos de lengua extranjera con exposición limitada es un proceso lento, caracterizado por estadios iniciales más largos que en L2 o aprendices adultos. Este contexto de aprendizaje proporciona información sobre la naturaleza del proceso de adquisición y cómo se refleja en los datos. [...]

20 p, 378.4 KB Minimizers and maximizers as different types of polarity items / Tubau Muntaña, Susagna (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona)
This chapter examines the properties of minimizers and maximizers (i. e. minimal and maximal extent- or quantity-denoting expressions) in English, Catalan, and Spanish. Special emphasis is put on (i) establishing which type of polarity item these expressions align with, and (ii) identifying connections between them and other elements of the polarity landscape such as negative quantifiers and Negative Concord Items. 20 p, 198.4 KB The syntax of the confirmatory pragmatic particle 'innit' / Tubau Muntaña, Susagna (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Filologia Anglesa i de Germanística)
En este artículo se propone un análisis sintáctico de la partícula innit mediante un enfoque cartográfico de las partículas pragmáticas y la teoría de actos de habla. Defendemos que cuando innit funciona como partícula facilitativa e epistémica no es una question tag, sino una partícula pragmática confirmatoria que requiere que el interlocutor confirme que la proposición ha de ser tratada como parte del common ground. [...]
In the present paper a syntactic analysis is put forward for the particle innit within a cartographic approach to pragmatic particles and a theory of speech acts. I claim here that when functioning as facilitative and epistemic, innit is not a non-canonical question tag, but rather a confirmatory pragmatic particle that requires the addressee to confirm that the proposition asserted is treated as common ground. In this paper we investigate the role of prosody and gesture in the interpretation of yes-answers to negative yes/no-questions in Catalan, a language with a polarity-based system of confirmation/contradiction of negative yes/no-questions. [...]

This paper investigates the interpretation and processing of simple transitive Catalan sentences with multiple negative expressions experimentally. Our results provide empirical confirmation that Negative Concord (NC) is the preferred and faster interpretation for negative sentences that either omit or contain the overt negative marker no 'not'.
