7 p, 288.0 KB Comparison of the traditional Enslin-Neff method and the modified dieng method for measuring water-uptake capacity / Kaufhold, Stephan (BGR Bundesanstalt fur Geowissenschaften und Rohstoffe) ; Dohrmann, Reiner (LBEG Landesamtfür Bergbau. Energie und Geologie)
A method for the determination of the water-uptake capacity of powders which is said to be applicable to viscose silk, specific celluloses, soap, paint, glue, gelatine, adhesives based on starch, biological samples, and soils, was proposed by Enslin in 1933 and has been improved several times since then. The synthesis, X-ray crystallographic structure, and water uptake measurements of the first coordination polymer made of a cyclodextrin and a transition metal ion (in this case, Cu) are shown. This coordination polymer is made by connecting paddle-wheel Cu units through a γ-cyclodextrin functionalized with eight carboxylate groups, is stable in water, and shows selective water-induced reversible structural transformations.

Vegetation in water-limited ecosystems relies strongly on access to deep water reserves to withstand dry periods. Most of these ecosystems have shallow soils over deep groundwater reserves. Understanding the functioning and functional plasticity of species-specific root systems and the patterns of or differences in the use of water sources under more frequent or intense droughts is therefore necessary to properly predict the responses of seasonally dry ecosystems to future climate.
