Hormone and carbohydrate regulation of defense secondary metabolites in a Mediterranean forest during drought / Huang, Jianbei (Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry) ; Hartmann, Henrik (Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry) ; Ogaya Inurrigarro, Romà (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals) ; Schöning, Ingo (Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry) ; Reichelt, Michael (Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology) ; Gershenzon, Jonathan (Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology) ; Peñuelas, Josep (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals)
Plants have evolved complex physiological mechanisms to regulate production of defense secondary metabolites (SMs) to cope with environmental stress such as drought. Yet, these mechanisms remain under-studied in mature trees, limiting our ability to understand effects of climate change on tree productivity and survival. [...]

31 p, 926.1 KB Long-term drought decreases ecosystem C and nutrient storage in a Mediterranean holm oak forest / Sardans i Galobart, Jordi (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals) ; Urbina Barreto, Ifigenia (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals) ; Grau Fernández, Oriol (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals) ; Asensio, Dolores (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals) ; Ogaya Inurrigarro, Romà (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals) ; Peñuelas, Josep (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals)
Aridity has increased in recent decades in the Mediterranean Basin and is projected to continue to increase in the coming decades. We studied the consequences of drought on the concentrations, stoichiometries and stocks of carbon (C), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) in leaves, foliar litter of a three dominant woody species and soil of a Mediterranean montane holm oak forest where soil-water content was experimentally reduced (15 % lower than the control plots) for 15 years. [...]

32 p, 304.8 KB Coordinated responses of mitochondrial antioxidative enzymes, respiratory pathways and metabolism in Arabidopsis thaliana thioredoxin trxo1 mutants under salinity / Sánchez Guerrero, Antonio (CEBAS-CSIC) ; Fernández Del-Saz, Néstor (Universitat de les Illes Balears) ; Florez-Sarasa, Igor (Centre de Recerca en Agrigenòmica) ; Ribas Carbó, Miquel (Universitat de les Illes Balears) ; Fernie, Alisdair (Max Planck Institute of Molecular Plant Physiology) ; Jiménez, Ana (CEBAS-CSIC) ; Sevilla, Francisca (CEBAS-CSIC)
Plant cells suffer alterations of their redox state and increase mitochondrial ROS generation during salinity. To avoid this, they activate several mitochondrial antioxidant and redox systems including the alternative oxidase (AOX), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and the ascorbate-glutathione (ASC-GSH) cycle components in a coordinated manner. 33 p, 1.7 MB Long-term experimental drought combined with natural extremes accelerate vegetation shift in a Mediterranean holm oak forest / Liu, Daijun (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals) ; Ogaya Inurrigarro, Romà (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals) ; Barbeta i Margarit, Adrià (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals) ; Yang, Xiaohong (Xi nan da xue (China). Key Laboratory of Horticulture Science for Southern Mountainous Regions.) ; Peñuelas, Josep (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals)
Increasing drought combined with natural extremes are expected to accelerate forest die-off and shifts in vegetation in the Mediterranean Basin. However, fewer studies have explored these climate-driven changes in forest ecosystems. [...]

Department of Biogeography) ; Peñuelas, Josep (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Biologia Animal, de Biologia Vegetal i d'Ecologia)
Diverse plant functions (e. g. , growth, storage, defense and anti-stress mechanisms) use elements disproportionally. We hypothesized that plants growing under different abiotic and biotic conditions would shift their elemental compositions in response to a very severe drought. [...]
