7 p, 835.1 KB Hydrothermal synthesis of smectite from dickite / Ryu, Kyoung-Won (Chungbuk University. Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences) ; Jang, Young-Nam (Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources. Minerals and Materials Processing Division) ; Chae, Soo-Chun (Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources. Minerals and Materials Processing Division) ; Bae, In-Kook (Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources. Minerals and Materials Processing Division) ; Choi, Sang-Hoon (Chungbuk University. Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences)
Dioctahedral smectite was prepared hydrothermally from dickite [AlSiO(OH)] as a starting material by autoclaving in a closed stainless steel vessel with variable temperature, pressure, time and pH conditions. [...]

12 p, 3.4 MB The characterization of CaCO3 in a geothermal environment : A sem/tem-eels study / Kim, Jin-Wook (Yonsei University. Department of Earth System Sciences) ; Kogure, Toshihiro (University of Tokyo. Department of Earth and Planetary Science) ; Yang, Kiho (Yonsei University. Department of Earth System Sciences) ; Kim, Sang-Tae (McMaster University. School of Geography and Earth Sciences) ; Jang, Young-Nam (Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources) ; Baik, Hion-Suck (Korea Basic Science Institute) ; Geesey, Gill (Montana State University. Department of Microbiology)
Mineralization of microbial biomass is a common phenomenon in geothermal habitats, but knowledge of the structure of the minerals formed in these environments is limited. A combination of spectroscopic, microscopic, and stable isotopic methods, as well as the chemical analysis of spring water, were employed in the present study to characterize calcium carbonate minerals deposited in filamentous cyanobacterial mats in different locations of La Duke hot spring, a circumneutral thermal feature near the north entrance of Yellowstone National Park, Montana, USA. 8 p, 1.3 MB Hydrothermal synthesis of kaolinite and its formation mechanism / Ryu, Kyoung-Won (Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources. Geological and Environmental Research Department) ; Jang, Young-Nam (Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources. Geological and Environmental Research Department) ; Chae, Soo-Chun (Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources. Geological and Environmental Research Department)
In spite of many studies of kaolinite synthesis, questions remain as to the transformation of gel into kaolinite, the kinetics of the reaction, and the influence of solution chemistry. The purpose of the present study was to perform a hydrothermal synthesis in order to understand better the transformation from boehmite to kaolinite. [...]
