Leishmaniosis is a neglected zoonosis transmitted by sand fly bites and the dog is the main reservoir of Leishmania infantum infection. Sand fly exposure could elicit T-cell mediated immunity against sand fly saliva proteins, a mechanism that could be protective against a negative outcome of the disease and could explain the natural resistance of Ibizan hounds toward leishmaniosis.
