8 p, 406.5 KB Quantum-state storage and processing for polarization qubits in an inhomogeneously broadened Λ-type three-level medium / Viscor, Daniel (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Física) ; Ferraro, Alessandro (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Física) ; Loiko, Yury (National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. B.I. We address the propagation of a single-photon pulse with two polarization components, i. e. , a polarization qubit, in an inhomogeneously broadened "phaseonium" Λ-type three-level medium. We combine some of the nontrivial propagation effects characteristic for this kind of coherently prepared systems and the controlled reversible inhomogeneous broadening technique to propose several quantum information-processing applications, such as a protocol for polarization qubit filtering and sieving as well as a tunable polarization beam splitter. We analyze two-center interference effects in the yields of ionization of a dissociating hydrogen molecular ion by an ultrashort vuv laser pulse. To this end, we performed numerical simulations of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for a H2+ model ion interacting with two time-delayed laser pulses. [...]

Given an unknown state of a qudit that has already been measured optimally, can one still extract any information about the original unknown state? Clearly, after a maximally informative measurement, the state of the system collapses into a postmeasurement state from which the same observer cannot obtain further information about the original state of the system. [...]

6 p, 586.0 KB Coherent control of vibrational state population in a nonpolar molecule / Picón Álvarez, Antonio (University of Colorado at Boulder. Department of Physics) ; Biegert, J. (Institut de Ciències Fotòniques) ; Jaron-Becker, A. (University of Colorado at Boulder. Department of Physics) ; Becker, A. (University of Colorado at Boulder. Department of Physics) ; American Physical Society
A coherent control scheme for the population distribution in the vibrational states of nonpolar molecules is proposed. Our theoretical analysis and results of numerical simulations for the interaction of the hydrogen molecular ion in its electronic ground state with an infrared laser pulse reveal a selective two-photon transition between the vibrational states via a coupling with the first excited dissociative state. [...]

Departament de Física) ; Muñoz Tapia, Ramon (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Física) ; American Physical Society
The problem of optimally discriminating between two completely unknown qubit states is generalized by allowing an error margin. It is visualized as a device-the programmable discriminator-with one data and two program ports, each fed with a number of identically prepared qubits-the data and the programs. [...]
