Well-defined productivity-precipitation relationships of ecosystems are needed as benchmarks for the validation of land models used for future projections. The productivity-precipitation relationship may be studied in two ways: the spatial approach relates differences in productivity to those in precipitation among sites along a precipitation gradient (the spatial fit, with a steeper slope); the temporal approach relates interannual productivity changes to variation in precipitation within sites (the temporal fits, with flatter slopes). 36 p, 425.0 KB Historical and event-based bioclimatic suitability predicts regional forest vulnerability to compound effects of severe drought and bark beetle infestation / Kitzberger, Thomas (Universidad Nacional del Comahue (Argentina)) ; Lloret Maya, Francisco (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals)
Vulnerability to climate change, and particularly to climate extreme events, is expected to vary across species ranges. Thus, we need tools to standardize the variability in regional climatic legacy and extreme climate across populations and species. [...]

Tropical and subtropical dry woodlands are rich in biodiversity and carbon. Yet, many of these woodlands are under high deforestation pressure and remain weakly protected. Here, we assessed how deforestation dynamics relate to areas of woodland protection and to conservation priorities across the world's tropical dry woodlands. [...]

13 p, 2.4 MB Indigenous Peoples' Lands are critical for safeguarding vertebrate diversity across the tropics / Sze, Jocelyne S. (University of Sheffield. Ecology and Evolutionary Biology) ; Childs, Dylan Z. (University of Sheffield. Ecology and Evolutionary Biology) ; Carrasco, Luis Roman (National University of Singapore. Department of Biological Sciences) ; Fernández-Llamazares, Álvaro (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Institut de Ciència i Tecnologia Ambientals) ; Garnett, Stephen (Charles Darwin University) ; Edwards, David (University of Cambridge. Department of Plant Sciences and Conservation Research Institute) ; Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Biologia Animal, de Biologia Vegetal i d'Ecologia
Indigenous Peoples are long-term custodians of their lands, but only recently are their contributions to conservation starting to be recognized in biodiversity policy and practice. Tropical forest loss and degradation are lower in Indigenous lands than unprotected areas, yet the role of Indigenous Peoples' Lands (IPL) in biodiversity conservation has not been properly assessed from regional to global scales. 8 p, 180.3 KB Canopy recovery after drought dieback in holm-oak Mediterranean forests of Catalonia (NE Spain) / Lloret Maya, Francisco (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Biologia Animal, de Biologia Vegetal i d'Ecologia) ; Siscart, Daniel (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals) ; Dalmases, Carles (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals)
Climate change is likely to produce more frequent and longer droughts in the Mediterranean region, like that of 1994, which produced important changes in the Quercus ilex forests, with up to 76% of the trees showing complete canopy dieback. [...]
