8 p, 149.3 KB Eutrophication, toxic cyanobacteria and cyanotoxins: when ecosystems cry for help / Vasconcelos, Vitor (CIMAR - Marine and Environmental Research Center (Porto, Portugal))
Eutrophication of freshwater resources has been studied worldwide and its consequences are of concern especially in waters used for recreation or drinking. The occurrence of cyanobacteria blooms is nowadays much better documented and among the major impacts we may point out the decrease in water transparency and oxygen levels, the production of off-flavours and the production of toxins. [...]
10 p, 280.7 KB Cyanobacteria in Spanish reservoirs. How frequently are they toxic? / Quesada, Antonio (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. Departamento de Biología) ; Sanchis, D. (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. Departamento de Biología) ; Carrasco, D. (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. Departamento de Biología)
In this paper we analyse the cyanobacterial occurrence in the Spanish reservoirs, using data obtained from published material or reports of several Spanish institutions. Our analysis shows that potentially toxic cyanobacteria are widespread in the Spanish reservoirs, dominating the phytoplankton community at least once during the study period in a high proportion of the investigated reservoirs (35-48%). [...]
