The rising frequency of infectious diseases under climate change poses an emerging threat to environmental and agricultural sustainability by consuming large quantities of materials. The demand for crops to produce personal protective equipment (PPE) competes for land and fertilizers, leads to cropland expansion, and accelerates climate change, but the ecological impacts remain unclear. A risk-based management approach to climate change is dominant in local adaptation plans integrating climate-science data with place-based vulnerability assessments. While the former has a regional character and uncertainty is approached by means of probabilities and confidence, the latter is context-specific, relies on local knowledge and uncertainty is barely assessed.
José Saramago argued about the need for an ethical insurrection of global civil society against the covert tyranny of the economic powers. Possibly a close example of what Saramago was advocating has been Extinction Rebellion (XR), a global social movement based on massive non-violent civil disobedience against species extinction and climate change.
