This article presents a qualitative case study with high school students involved in a task based on data and the evaluation of a deterministic model of gene expression to explain an animal disease. The research questions are: 1) How are students' positions in the written discourse when applying and evaluating a model of gene expression to explain an animal disease? and 2) what is the critical capacity shown in the oral discourse of the students to evaluate a deterministic model in this context? The results show students' difficulties to critically evaluate a deterministic model and changes in their positions regarding determinism throughout the task. [...]

Why are nature and culture sometimes separated by an abyss in some societies, while in others they appear to be two sides of the same coin? Dualistic thought is quite common, and it dominates in anthropology. [...]

There is a good number of linguists, psychologists and other scholars from different fields who believe that a speaker's native language influences in a crucial manner the world view each speaker acquires, and also contributes to establish taxonomies and shape, or even determine, thought in general. 17 p, 81.1 KB Causality and Determinism : Tension, or Outright Conflict? / Hoefer, Carl (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Filosofia)
In the philosophical tradition, the notions of determinism and causality are strongly linked: it is assumed that in a world of deterministic laws, causality may be said to reign supreme; and in any world where the causality is strong enough, determinism must hold. [...]
