19 p, 1.4 MB Partitioning the impact of environment and spatial structure on alpha and beta components of taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic diversity in European ants / Arnan, Xavier (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals) ; Cerdá, Xim (Estación Biológica de Doñana) ; Retana Alumbreros, Javier (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals)
We analyze the relative contribution of environmental and spatial variables to the alpha and beta components of taxonomic (TD), phylogenetic (PD), and functional (FD) diversity in ant communities found along different climate and anthropogenic disturbance gradients across western and central Europe, in order to assess the mechanisms structuring ant biodiversity. 11 p, 964.5 KB A preliminary checklist of the ants (Hymenoptera, Formicidae) of Andorra / Bernadou, Abel (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.
Within the last decade, checklists of the ant fauna of several European countries have been published or updated. Nevertheless, no ant checklists have hitherto been published for the principality of Andorra, a small landlocked country located in the eastern part of the Pyrenees. [...]

Two species of myrmecophilous crickets, Myrmecophilus acervorum and Myrmecophilus ochraceus, are here established as present in the Iberian Peninsula. The generic host range for M. acervorum is limited to one genus, Lasius. [...]

12 p, 111.0 KB Ant-aphid relations in Costa Rica, Central America (Hymenoptera: Formicidae; Hemiptera: Aphididae) / Espadaler, Xavier (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals) ; Pérez Hidalgo, Nicolás (Universidad de León. Departamento de Biodiversidad y Gestión Ambiental) ; Villalobos Muller, William (Universidad de Costa Rica. Centro de Investigación en Biología Celular y Molecular)
We present the first catalogue of ant-aphid associations (Hymenoptera: Formicidae / Hemiptera: Aphididae) of Costa Rica. 29 species of ants and 18 species of aphids establish 48 relationships. Those interactions seem not to be rare in Costa Rica.

Departament de Biologia Animal, de Biologia Vegetal i d'Ecologia)
One Laboulbenia species is added to the checklist of Italian fungi. Laboulbenia camponoti was detected on the ant Camponotus aethiops. Additionally, L. formicarum was found on a new host (Lasius niger) in France. [...]

(Géosciences Rennes I) ; Centre National de Recherche Scientifique (França)
Gerontoformica cretacica n. gen. , n. sp. , until now the oldest known ant, is described after a putative worker specimen, from the Uppermost Albian amber of France. Although its characters are those of modern ants, it does not fit in any recent ant subfamilies.

Se ha estudiado el ciclo biológico de tres especies de hormigas mediterráneas, y se han constatado importantes diferencias entre ellas. Cataglyphis cursor hibema sin descendencia y completa un ciclo de nidada entre los meses de abril y septiembre. [...]
Colony life cycles of three mediterranean ants have been analyzed, and important differences have been found among them. Cataglyphis cursor does not keep brood during the winter, and rears new individuals from egg to adult in only one activity period, from April to September. [...]

Laboratori de Zoologia) ; Espadaler, Xavier (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Biologia Animal, de Biologia Vegetal i d'Ecologia) ; Gómez, C.
Counts of ommatidia number versus maximum head width in 469 workers of the ant species Lasius flavus (Fabr. ) and Lasius myops Forel provide evidence that the rule proposed by Seifert (1983) for central european populations is useful to differentiante meridional populations of both species. [...]
