(Universidad de Sonora. Departamento de Investigaciones Científicas y Tecnológicas) ; López Piña, José E. (Universidad de Sonora. Ecological processes are centered to water availability in drylands; however, less known nutrient stoichiometry can help explain much of their structure and ecological interactions. Here we look to the foliar stoichiometry of carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) of 38 dominant plant species from the Sonoran Desert, grouped in four different functional types to describe ecological characteristics and processes. 8 p, 1.1 MB Estimation of phenotypic variability in symbiotic nitrogen fixation ability of common bean under drought stress using 15 N natural abundance in grain / Polania, Jose (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Facultat de Biociències) ; Poschenrieder, Charlotte (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Facultat de Biociències) ; Rao, Idupulapati (Centro Internacional de Agricultura Tropical (Colombia)) ; Beebe, Stephen E (Centro Internacional de Agricultura Tropical (Colombia))
Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L. ) is the most important food legume, cultivated by small farmers and is usually exposed to unfavorable conditions with minimum use of inputs. Drought and low soil fertility, especially phosphorus and nitrogen (N) deficiencies, are major limitations to bean yield in smallholder systems. [...]

Elemental stoichiometry constitutes an inherent link between biogeochemistry and the structure and processes within food webs, and thus is at the core of ecosystem functioning. Stoichiometry allows for spanning different levels of biological organization, from cellular metabolism to ecosystem structure and nutrient cycling, and is therefore particularly useful for establishing links between different ecosystem compartments. 11 p, 394.7 KB Overview on current and past global changes in the Mediterranean ecosystems / Peñuelas, Josep (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Biologia Animal, de Biologia Vegetal i d'Ecologia)
Atmospheric increases in CO, and other greenhouse gases are the basis of Global Change. The effects on ecosystems are not yet well known. Effects on Mediterranean ecosystems are even less known. Some of the current knowledge on direct and indirect (through climate changes) effects on Mediterranean ecosystems is presented. [...]
