Summary: tree responses to altered water availability range from immediate (e. g. stomatal regulation) to delayed (e. g. crown size adjustment). The interplay of the different response times and processes, and their effects on long-term whole-tree performance, however, is hardly understood. [...]

Forests play a major role in the global carbon cycle. Previous studies on the capacity of forests to sequester atmospheric CO2 have mostly focused on carbon uptake, but the roles of carbon turnover time and its spatiotemporal changes remain poorly understood. [...]

The DO₃SE (Deposition of O₃ for Stomatal Exchange) model is an established tool for estimating ozone(O₃) deposition, stomatal flux and impacts to a variety of vegetation types across Europe. It has been embedded within the EMEP (European Monitoring and Evaluation Programme) photochemical model to provide a policy tool capable of relating the flux-based risk of vegetation damage to O₃ precursor emission scenarios for use in policy formulation.
