Nowadays, antibiotic resistance is one of the main public health problems. Finding alternative strategies to the use of antibiotics in veterinary medicine is one of the great challenges. In poultry production (and in other food animals) some of these possible alternatives would be: a) to take advantage of bacterial cell to cell communication (quorum sensing) and the disruption of that communication (quorum quenching) to control the proliferation pathogens; b) the use of additives in animal feed which modulate the intestinal microbiota, promoting bacterial populations with antibacterial activity.
