Abstract: Before the most important refugee crisis seen in years, the States of the World had to mobilize and take action. Though the worst part took place in the Middle East, affecting Syria, Palestine, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Turkey, Lebanon, and many other countries, a high number of refugees tried to seek protection in Europe. Due the big mass influx coming into the European territory, most of it through Turkey, and the recent terrorist attacks, Europe had to take some measures like the "EU-Turkey Statement" of 18th March 2016 to tackle irregular migration and prevent the entrance of smugglers and terrorists. Even though, the EU-Turkey Statement has been severely criticized on account of the consequences of its application. For this reason this research aims to analyse the International and European system in relation to the refugee conditions and the Statement as such, and conclude whether it complies with the legal standards or, otherwise, if it has been a failure.
