Ten years and five projects : the evolution of research in public service interpreting in Catalonia

Resumen:	MIRAS research group started studying public service interpreting (PSI) in 2009. The group has completed five funded projects and has engaged in plenty of training and education activities. This paper bases on MIRAS' most recent project: "Expanding professional borders: PSI and the social challenges of the new millennium", which has produced seven videos for educational and awareness-raising purposes. These videos will be used in the paper to revisit previous research projects by MIRAS and their most important contributions. MIRAS' first research project was a survey. Based on questionnaires, it collected information from interpreters (including intercultural mediators and non-professional interpreters), public service providers and users. It provided a broad overview of the situation of PSI in 2010. MIRAS' second research project compared accreditation systems around the world and reflected on the situation in Catalonia from the perspective of education and training. MIRAS' third research project used transcriptions of recorded roleplays where ten experienced interpreters (5 for Arabic-Spanish/Catalan, 5 for Chinese-Spanish/Catalan) were invited to interpret. Afterwards, they also participated in a retrospective interview. These recordings were used to analyse interpreters' strategic competence. MIRAS' fourth research project, the TIPp project, based on transcriptions of recordings of 55 naturally-occurring court hearings where interpreting was requested for one of the participants. These transcriptions were analysed considering Wadensjö's (1999) distinction between 'talk as text' and 'talk as activity'. This project discovered that, on average, a 54% of the trial was not interpreted to defendants, and 21 serious mistakes (e. g. serious omission, addition, false sense or nonsense) per hour were made while interpreting. MIRAS' currently ongoing project focuses on child language brokering in Catalonia. The paper reviews the main results of each of these projects and explains how they have been reflected in the videos created. It also discusses the main challenges encountered while producing the videos, namely, certain biases towards female characters, or the need to find a balance between conveying a sense of authenticity while also empowering migrated communities in Catalonia. Finally, the paper will also discuss possible paths for future research in PSI in Catalonia.
