In this paper we characterize the phase portraits of the complex Abel polynomial differential equations z˙=(z−a)(z−b)(z−c),with z∈C, a,b,c∈C. We give the complete description of their topological phase portraits in the Poincaré disc, i. [...]

We present an algorithm to determine topological invariants of inhomogeneous systems, such as alloys, disordered crystals, or amorphous systems. Based on the kernel polynomial method, our algorithm allows us to study samples with more than 107 degrees of freedom. [...]

Unraveling the complexity of the Jevons Paradox : the link between innovation, efficiency, and sustainability
/
Giampietro, Mario (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Institut de Ciència i Tecnologia Ambientals) ;
Mayumi, Kozo (The University of Tokushima. Faculty of Integrated Arts and Sciences)
The term "Jevons Paradox" flags the need to consider the different hierarchical scales at which a system under analysis changes its identity in response to an innovation. Accordingly, an analysis of the implications of the Jevons Paradox must abandon the realm of reductionism and deal with the complexity inherent in the issue of sustainability: when studying evolution and real change how can we define "what has to be sustained" in a system that continuously becomes something else? In an attempt to address this question this paper presents three theoretical concepts foreign to conventional scientific analysis: (i) complex adaptive systems-to address the peculiar characteristics of learning and self-producing systems; (ii) holons and holarchy-to explain the implications of the ambiguity found when observing the relation between functional and structural elements across different scales (steady-state vs. [...]

How the "rapport de forces" evolves in a soccer match : the dynamics of collective decisions in a complex system
/
Gréhaigne, Jean-Francis (Université de Franche-Comté) ;
Godbout, Paul (Laval University (Quebec, Canadà)) ;
Zerai, Zeineb (Université de Franche-Comté)
This article discusses the contribution of dynamics to the study of complex systems with regards to performance analysis in soccer. Evaluation tools are presented to better understand how the "rapport de forces" evolves with perturbations of play, contraction / expansion phases of game play, and possession of the ball. [...]

[...] This paper presents a novel approach of application for Social Nertwork Analysis (SNA) into the field of Innovation Studies from a Complex Systems view, with the aim to intervene in the design and implementation of learning for innovation policy, in less innovative countries.
