The article reports on two 15th-century Franciscan manuscripts currently held in the Bargello Museum in Florence. Both manuscripts have not been sufficiently considered by scholars, yet they are quite relevant and deserve a deeper investigation. Choir books ms. A 46 is an Antiphonarium with the Proper of the Saints, which is possible identify as a part of the six volumes series decorated for the convent of San Francis of Bologna, now at the Museo Civico Medievale of the city. We can indeed recognize two of its Lombard-Emilian illuminators: the Collaborator of Giovanni d'Antonio da Bologna and Guiniforte da Vimercate who should be regarded only as a specialist for calligraphic initials. Enriching Digital Cultural Heritage Collections via Annotations: The CULTURA approach

This paper introduces the main characteristics of the CULTURA project and of the IPSA collection,... more This paper introduces the main characteristics of the CULTURA project and of the IPSA collection, which constitutes one relevant use case presently in use in the CULTURA environment. We describe the innovative annotation features of the CULTURA portal for digital humanities; these features are aimed at improving the interaction of users with digital cultural heritage (CH) content. The annotation functions consist of two modules: the FAST annotation service as back-end and the CAT Web front-end integrated in the CULTURA portal. The annotation service also adds a semantic layer over the managed collections enhancing discoverability and interoperability capabilities of cultural heritage resources. A user-based evaluation of the environment has been carried out.

This international webinar celebrates the publication of the book “The Burke Collection of Italia... more This international webinar celebrates the publication of the book “The Burke Collection of Italian Manuscript Paintings” (London, Paul Holberton, 2020) with a scholarly gathering presenting papers on subjects inspired by the publication.
Forty-three high quality manuscript paintings, including two manuscripts, many by some of the most renowned artists of their day, appear in the lavishly illustrated catalogue of the Burke Collection published in December 2020. An international team of seventeen scholars contributed to present a coherent and continuous history of
Italian manuscript painting from the twelfth to the seventeenth centuries. Bringing together different scholars also on international renown, this Webinar explores further three topics brought into focus in the splendid publication.

Further work is needed to provide useful and usable tools supporting users in working with those digital contents in virtual environments. The CULTURA project is developing a corpus agnostic research environment integrating innovative services that guide, assist and empower a wide spectrum of users in their interaction with cultural artefacts. This article introduces the CULTURA system and services and the two collections that have been used for testing and evaluating the digital humanities research environment. An evaluation model is outlined that builds a common ground for systematic evaluations of the CULTURA environment in the context of the two collections, and for implementing different evaluation strategies. The consolidated evaluation outcomes indicate a positive perception of CULTURA. Furthermore, a range of useful suggestions for future improvement were collected and fed back to the development of the final implementation of the research environment. The Venetian monastery of San Giorgio Maggiore still houses some fifteen choir books, some of the... more The Venetian monastery of San Giorgio Maggiore still houses some fifteen choir books, some of them beautifully illuminated, dating from the seventh to eighth decade of the fifteenth century. The series, as was the established practice, not only served to carry out the liturgical practices associated with the spiritual life of the monastery, but also reflected the prestige and wealth of the community. For this reason, the patron, Abbot Cipriano Rinaldini, called upon an exceptional team of late Gothic masters, among whom Belbello da Pavia stands out.
However, the current appearance of the illuminated volumes does not correspond to the original facies, as the volumes were reworked over time. In particular, an analysis of the sources written by the historians of the monastery (especially Valle 1693) reveals that a decisive intervention was a restoration aimed at updating the choir books to the new Breviary. The result of this work was a profound alteration of the volumes, from which numerous pages were removed, to be relocated in new positions, even in other volumes of the series. If the principle with which the illustrations were made in the 15th century was to stimulate in the monks the "continuous meditation" encouraged by Ludovico Barbo, founder of the reformed Benedictine congregation of Santa Giustina to which San Giorgio belonged, the new arrangement of the illuminated papers in the volumes suggests that the restorer followed a different criterion, most likely thematic.
My paper will therefore focus on these two moments in the life of the choir books, reflecting on how historical contexts, the use of the volumes and changes in liturgy shaped and subsequently modified one of the most beautiful sets of choir books of the fifteenth century.

Recent investigations into little-known or completely unpublished manuscripts in the Correr Museu... more Recent investigations into little-known or completely unpublished manuscripts in the Correr Museum Library in Venice have brought to light a group of codices which, due to the presence in the calendar of the feasts of the Holy Cross and St Athanasius, as well as miniatures depicting the two subjects, can be traced back to the no longer extant Benedictine women's monastery of Santa Croce della Giudecca. The monastery, home to a virtuous community led in the mid-fifteenth century by Blessed Euphemia Giustinian, received the relics of St. Athanasius in 1455, stolen from Constantinople after the fall of the Eastern Roman Empire. The manuscripts found, when illuminated, are remarkable for their figurative decorations that can be traced back to the Venetian artistic milieu of the 15th century, and present texts of various kinds, including some linked to the cult of Athanasius, others reporting chronicles that provide interesting insights into the life of the Santa Croce community. The research group of History of Illuminated manuscripts of the University of Padua is therefore studying the codices found, identifying other manuscripts with the same provenance, and reconstructing, as far as possible, the consistency and figurative facies of the monastery's book heritage, now dispersed between the Correr Library and the Marciana Library in Venice, but also in other national and international libraries that the research group is gradually identifying.

Pur rientrando in una tipologia illustrativa del poema dantesco di ampia diffusione, il ms. 9 si distingue per alcune insolite scelte iconografiche, che intendo analizzare nel mio intervento, tentando di individuarne i modelli e chiarirne il significato.

Nel XIV secolo i diversi tentativi di trasporre in immagini la Commedia dantesca diedero origine ... more Nel XIV secolo i diversi tentativi di trasporre in immagini la Commedia dantesca diedero origine a manoscritti miniati estremamente vari per caratteristiche codicologiche, mise en page e figurazione. Con la sua molteplicità di soluzioni per rispondere al problema di visualizzare un testo nuovo e pertanto privo di una tradizione figurativa consolidata, l’illustrazione della Commedia divenne un’incubatrice di nuove immagini, destinate a travalicare il limite delle pagine ove videro la luce per offrire forma e colore ad altri testi. Uno di questi è proprio una delle maggiori fonti dantesche: l’Eneide. Il Medioevo latino fu avaro d’immagini per l’inarrivabile capolavoro: scorrendo i manoscritti virgiliani miniati da dopo la tarda Antichità, epoca cui risalgono i celeberrimi Virgilio Vaticano e Virgilio Romano, troviamo un nucleo di una certa consistenza non prima del periodo che va dal X al XIII secolo, quando in Italia meridionale, Germania, Francia e Inghilterra vennero esemplati alcuni manoscritti recanti un’illustrazione di pennello, codici però parcamente miniati e le cui scelte iconografiche non conobbero un seguito. I secoli esaminati non seppero dunque consegnare al tardo Medioevo e al primo Rinascimento un’iconografia canonica dell’Eneide: i miniatori che volessero illustrare il poema furono pertanto costretti ad attingere ad altre tradizioni. Tra queste, forte è l’influenza dei romanzi, ma non solo: come propongo nel mio intervento, nella loro ricerca di modelli per visualizzare l’epopea dell’eroe troiano, i miniatori guardarono a volte proprio alla Commedia, opera dalla genesi ancora recente ma già d’indiscussa autorevolezza.

Il Trecento, secolo che vide la redazione della Divina Commedia e la sua trionfale diffusione, fu... more Il Trecento, secolo che vide la redazione della Divina Commedia e la sua trionfale diffusione, fu anche l’età in cui vennero elaborate e si affermarono le principali tipologie illustrative del sacrato poema. Se, come osserva Petrucci, la Commedia fu l’unico grande testo in volgare che nel corso del secolo venne riprodotto e diffuso secondo tutta la gamma delle tipologie grafico-librarie correnti, analoghe considerazioni possono essere fatte in merito alle scelte illustrative operate da committenti e miniatori, che spaziano dal ricorso a iniziali istoriate ad apertura di cantica, a sintetiche scenette all’inizio di ciascun canto, a più ampi cicli papyrus style o a vignette. Il secolo successivo non appare da meno e dispiega un’analoga ricchezza illustrativa: nel Quattrocento ritroviamo infatti le strategie di narrazione per immagini messe a punto dai primi illustratori della Commedia, cui si aggiunge una nuova modalità di impaginazione degli episodi danteschi, che prevede l’utilizzo di grandi iniziali istoriate in cui l’artista tenta di condensare uno o più episodi tratti dal canto in questione. Si tratta di un tipo d’illustrazione di non agevole esecuzione, testimoniata in due soli codici, l’It. 78 della Bibliothèque Nationale di Parigi miniato da Cristoforo Cortese e il BR 39 della Biblioteca Nazionale di Firenze, in cui è attivo un miniatore lombardo da identificare probabilmente con il Maestro del Libro d’Ore di Modena. Mentre nel primo manoscritto il progetto illustrativo fu presto abbandonato – il codice reca solo dieci iniziali istoriate –, il secondo, pur essendo anch’esso incompleto, sfoggia un corredo più ricco, costituito da settantanove splendidi capilettera. Inoltre, nel caso del Banco Rari 39, il programma decorativo appare ancor più ambizioso che nel Dante parigino, poiché ogni canto del poema è suddiviso in due parti, ciascuna preceduta da un’iniziale istoriata relativa alla porzione di canto seguente.

La sua diffusione fu sorprendentemente rapida, e non si dovette attendere troppo tempo perché i lettori della prima metà del Trecento avvertissero il desiderio di vedere trasposti in immagini i versi danteschi. La crescente domanda di copie del poema illustrate pose i miniatori nella difficile situazione di dover elaborare ex novo il corredo figurativo di accompagnamento del testo, sfida di non facile risoluzione dovuta al fatto che la Commedia era un’opera dalla genesi recente e priva di una consolidata tradizione illustrativa alle spalle. Alla ricerca delle soluzioni iconografiche più adatte a dare sostanza alle descrizioni contenute nei canti, gli illustratori trecenteschi del poema si rivolsero alle fonti più disparate, principalmente coeve ma anche, in più di un caso, dal sapore antico, come si avrà modo di vedere nell’intervento proposto.

After Dante’s death (1321), the Divine Comedy quickly became one the most appreciated works of It... more After Dante’s death (1321), the Divine Comedy quickly became one the most appreciated works of Italian literature. Its spreading was impressively wide, and since from the first half of the XIV century patrons asked for illuminated manuscripts of the poem, looking for a visual support to imagine Dante’s pilgrimage through the Hereafter. Therefore, illuminators had to face the difficult challenge of illustrating a text with no previous iconographic tradition. The easiest way to deal with this issue was turning to other sources, choosing among them the most suitable iconographies to be re-used in Dante’s masterpiece illustration. Particularly for Hell, Medieval art had much to offer to the first illuminators of the poem, for example devils and hellish settings are often clearly inspired from the sculpted Last judgments on the tympanums of the churches and illuminations to sacred texts. But, just as Dante’s literary sources were both medieval and classical, illuminators’ quest for images wasn’t limited to contemporary sources, and in some cases we are able to discover the echo of classical models in the Divine Comedy illustrations. For example, in many illuminations Hell is represented as the stereotyped fortified citadel that was used in Roman art to symbolize the city. This is even more meaningful because in the Virgilius Vaticanus Hades is represented as a fortified citadel, thus proving that this was an iconographic choice of long tradition. In other cases, classical quotes can be even more precise: e.g. in the ms. 1102 of the Angelica Library in Rome the sarcophagus of pope Anastasio II is clearly inspired by a classical one. Finally, Master of the Paduan Antiphonaries choices are very significant: he was mainly inspired by Giotto, but sometimes he used classical models, like in the Saint Petersburg Roman de Troie and in the Divine Comedy Egerton 943, where he makes use of iconographies whose origin can be traced back to the classical period.

One of the challenges in making available a digital collection of cultural content is to raise an... more One of the challenges in making available a digital collection of cultural content is to raise and maintaining the interest of non-specialized users. To this end, we propose to enrich the functions of a digital archive with short lectures, called narratives, as a personalization method to support and guide users inside a collection of historical material. Narratives aim at highlighting the richness of the available digital content, which may be difficult to retrieve for non-experts, but users are free to interact with the system according to their own interests. We tested the approach with a task-oriented evaluation. A group of users followed a narrative before interacting with the content, while a control group accessed the content directly. Results showed that, since narratives included the usage of the available tools, the user group that followed the guided tour was facilitated in learning how to interact with the system and access to relevant content

Testi e musica destinati alla preghiera quotidiana dei monaci sono accompagnati da illustrazioni condotte a mano con colori a tempera e lamina d'oro da miniatori quali Belbello da Pavia, Jacopo del Giallo, il Maestro dell' Antifonario Q e il Secondo Maestro dell'Antifonario M, artisti che proprio dal loro lavoro a San Giorgio derivano il nome. I saggi, le biografie dei miniatori e le schede di catalogo a firma di studiosi e specialisti di settore guidano il lettore, assieme a uno straordinario e inedito apparato iconografico, nella conoscenza dei corali, esaminati per la prima volta con uno sguardo interdisciplinare. Le nuove ricerche sulla storia, la liturgia, la musica dei volumi, assieme alla puntuale lettura stilistica e alle indagini scientifiche sulle miniature, restituiscono la grandezza della committenza benedettina e degli artisti che per essa operarono.

This volume is devoted to the choir books of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice, which represent some of our most important evidence for Italian Renaissance illumination and are fortunately still in large part preserved at the Abbey that commissioned them. The texts and music for the monks' daily prayers are accompanied by hand-painted tempera illustrations embellished with gold leaf, produced by such illuminators as Belbello da Pavia, Jacopo del Giallo, the Master of Antiphonary Q and the Second Master of Antiphonary M, the names of the latter artists deriving from their work at San Giorgio. The essays, biographies of the illumina-tors and catalogue entries written by scholars and specialists together with the lavish illustrations guide the reader through the discovery of the choir books, examined here for the first time from an interdisciplinary perspective. New research on the volumes' history, liturgy and music, along with meticulous stylistic analysis and scientific study of the illuminations, reveals the greatness of the Benedictine patrons and the artists who worked for them.

Fragments of the Hereafter. Trecento illuminations of the Divine Comedy

This book presents the results of my PhD research on the illuminated manuscripts of the Divine Comedy produced in Northern Italy in the XIV century.
During the late Middle Ages Italian Northern regions constituted a lively and flourishing area of the country, also from an art-historical perspective: it is sufficient to recall the making of the Arena chapel frescoes in 1303-1305 by Giotto in Padua, and the thriving activity of many scriptoria in Bologna, strictly connected to its important University.
Nevertheless, if we consider the state of the art on illuminated codices of the poem, Northern Italy seems to have been partially neglected because of the considerable manuscript production that took place in Florence in the first half of the XIV century, or maybe just because of the Florentine origin of Dante.
Besides, after the crucial study on the illuminated manuscripts of the Divine Comedy of the whole peninsula by Brieger, Meiss and Singleton (1969), modern studies were still lacking a research focusing on the Padana area with a comprehensive overview. It was pivotal to discover the relationships among the most significant Northern Italy manuscripts of the poem, some of them lavishly illuminated and therefore object of monographic studies, but rarely compared to outline connections and divergences and to identify important passages and milestones in the development of the Divine Comedy illustration in Northern Italy.
An identification of the most significant manuscripts of the poem was necessary, followed by an in-depth analysis of the codices and a wider analysis aiming at discovering the most common iconographic choices and the most original ones, the most employed illustrative systems and their sources.
Subsequently, the research was structured in different parts, each of them is presented in a section of the book.

In section 1 I present the most representative manuscripts, selected because of the great number of illuminations and because of the particular iconographic solutions they show. Certainly it was not possible to disregard the Florentine production, thus some of the most important Florentine manuscripts are presented. Particular attention is given to the ms. Egerton 943 of the British Library, an extraordinary book with a stunning number of images by the Master of the Paduan Antiphonaries, usually dated by art-historians in the Twenties- beginning of the Thirties of the XIV century. Based on the study of the glosses, the analysis of the Master’s career and a reconsideration of the contemporary Bolognese illumination, I suggest a different dating at the middle of the Thirties, a dating which matches philologists proposals.

Section 2 is dedicated to the analysis of the images created by the first Divine Comedy illuminators to represent the main characters of Dante’s poem and the landscapes of the three Realms. After Dante’s death in 1321, the Divine Comedy quickly became one of the most appreciated works of that time: its geographical distribution was impressively wide, and from the first half of the 14th century patrons looking for visual support to imagine Dante’s pilgrimage began asking for illuminated manuscripts of the poem. Illuminators were therefore faced with the difficult challenge of illustrating a text with no previous iconographic tradition. The accurate analysis of the poem’s illuminations and of their relationship with the text help us to retrace the process of the image creation, and to understand the meaning and the reasons of some illustrative choices. Particularly when we find an image that evidently deviates from the textual description we must consider a wide range of possible causes, such as: did the illuminator use an iconography taken from another context? Did the author of the iconographic programme expressly ask for an image to suggest a particular exegesis of the poem? Or, more simply, was the illuminator wrong because he didn’t know the text of the Divine Comedy or because he was more familiar with other visual models?
We must also consider the function of the images, as the function was frequently a crucial element in the genesis of an illumination. E.g., in the manuscript 67 of the Seminary Library of Padua illuminations represent a short abstract of the content of the canto, so they are depicted before the beginning of every canto and they are very concise. For every canto, the illuminator picked the most representative episode, so when the user starts his reading he already knows what he’s going to find, while, if the reader is already familiar with the story, he can easily find the pages he want to read just looking at the images.
Another important element that should be considered is represented by the sources illuminators turned to, looking for inspiration for creating new images.
Particularly for the Inferno medieval art had much to offer the early illuminators of the poem, for example punishments and hellish settings could be inspired from the sculpted Last Judgments on the tympanums of the churches and illuminations of sacred texts. But in some cases it is possible to recognize suggestions deriving from other traditions, such as the Bolognese juridical illumination or the influence of ancient models. Particularly in some illuminations by the Master of the Paduan Antiphonaries it was possible to recognize the echo of an ancient repertoire.

In section 3 I analyze the relationship between text and images in the selected manuscripts. In fact, beyond image analysis, it is also crucial to reflect on the illustrative systems and what their choices reveal on the readers and the patrons of the first manuscripts of the Divine Comedy.
The investigation takes into consideration the ancient world inheritance, subsequently focussing on the influence of medieval illustration of poems and Romans, in particular the three famous copies of the Roman de Troie currently in Vienna (Österreichische Nationalbibliothek, ms. 2571) Paris (Bibliothéque Nationale, ms. 782) and Saint Petersburg (National Library of Russia, ms. Fr.F.v.XIV.3).
Concerning patrons, one of the difficulty of my research work was to define a clear picture about Divine Comedy manuscripts patronage in Northern Italy during the XIV century. In fact, we scarcely have any information about the manuscripts selected for the present study, nor we have coat of arms or evidence to help us, apart from two codices, the ms. 33 of the Budapest University Library and the ms. SC. 1162 of the Gambalunghiana Library in Rimini. The Hungarian manuscript bears in the first page of the Inferno the coat of arms of the Emo family, a Venetian noble family, while in the case of the Rimini manuscript, a sonnet in the inner cover of the book says that its patron was Jacopo Gradenigo, a Venetian noble man who lived between the end of the 14th and the beginning of the 15th century. For all the other manuscripts we don’t have any similar evidence: the only thing we can do is to draw a profile of the patrons starting from the analysis of the manuscripts and the images.
In the case of the Egerton 943, the presence of a commentary reveals a particular approach to the text of the Divine Comedy, not only aiming at the reading and the enjoyment of the poem, but also willing to a deep comprehension of it. Moreover, the Egerton 943 commentary is a particularly educated one, because it was written by a Dominican and it is full of theological and philosophical insights.
Also the choice of the illuminator is indicative: the Master of the Paduan Antiphonaries, before illustrating the Egerton 943, had already proved in many occasions to be able to realize big illumination apparatuses to illustrate a text, like in the Vienna Roman de Troie and the Russian Roman de Troie.
So we can conclude that the Egerton 943 patron was a learned man, with a precise will on how his Divine Comedy manuscript should have been like. Probably, he not only appreciated the Master of the Paduan Antiphonaries great capability of realizing big illumination cycles, but also likes the references to the ancient art that the Master shows in his illuminations.
