Abstract:	Se é que existe a mentira, qual o seu limite em relação à verdade? Partindo de problemas reais que estava vivendo na época, relacionados a heresias e conflitos religiosos, Santo Agostinho fornece importantes insights sobre o assunto em dois textos Sobre a Mentira (De Mendacium) e Contra a Mentira(Contra Mendacium). Tudo leva a crer que a sua preocupação com o assunto era recorrente, já que os dois textos são praticamente idênticos. Sem pretensões de definir o que é verdade, o bispo de Hipona aplica o seu método negativo para criar uma "tipologia" de mentiras existente. Evidencia assim um fato bastante esquecido nos dias de hoje: para além da diversidade de espécies de mentira, se algo não é verdadeiro, só pode ser falso.
Abstract:	If there are lies, which is their limit in relation to truth? Out of real problems that he was facing at the time, related the religious heresies and conflicts, Saint Augustine supplies insights on the subject in two texts "On Lie" (De Mendacium) and "Against Lie" (Contra Mendacium). There are good reasons to believe that his concern with the subject was recurrent, since the two texts are practically identical. Without pretensions to define what truth is, the bishop of Hippona applies his negative method to create a tipology of existing kinds of lies. Thus, he evidences a almost completely forgotten fact nowadays: beyond the diversity of species of lie, if something is not true, it only can be false.
