The possible cultic meaning of the "hole in the rock" in the Hebrew Bible deserves to be studied. The following paper is devoted to this apparently marginal aspect of the historic religious scene of Ancient Israel. The starting point of this analysis are two closely connected passages from the book of Isaiah (Is 2:6-21 and Is 57:3-9), which, in spite of the interpretative problems they pose, offer abundant data. The study tries to evidence the connection between specific cults, their features often unnoticed among prophetic invectives (and which have also been deliverately hidden through various textual interventions), and a rock and cavern environment, which traditionally also took in graves. |
