Abstract: |
Abstract: |
This paper discusses the symbolic construction of the collective subject Humanity in relation to the paradigm of progress in the 19th Century. Whether considered as the true being of men -whose individual lives can only be defned by their sharing in the collective being-, as "real" society, as opposed to "accidental" national societies, or as a guarantee of immortality in a post-religious world, Humanity is always the subject of Progress. This is possible because certainty about the future operates as a foundation for action and a parameter for the evaluation of the present. Nevertheless its doxical acceptability coexists with multiple controversies about the irreducibility of material progress and moral or social progress. |
