La presente investigación es una biografía intelectual del fotógrafo Humberto Rivas (Buenos Aires 1937, Barcelona, 2009), ganador del Premio Nacional de Fotografía 1997, y uno de los fotógrafos más reconocidos de la escena fotográfica española de finales del siglo XX. La importancia del aporte de Rivas consiste en haber sido un punto de referencia para una generación de fotógrafos en su mayoría catalanes, que lucharon desde finales de los años setenta, por otorgar a la fotografía un lugar en las artes. De origen argentino, Rivas emigró a Barcelona en 1976 vísperas a implantarse la dictadura militar en su país. A su llegada, sintonizó con la expectativa de jóvenes fotógrafos, interesados en trascender la idea documental de la fotografía, y en cambio, proponer una fotografía como obra de creación, capaz de manifestar la expresión personal del autor. Su formación artística recibida en Argentina en los años sesenta, cuando dicho país gozaba de una importante influencia de las principales tendencias del arte moderno, le permitieron acercarse sin prejuicios a la imagen fotográfica y tratarla como un medio más de expresión. Su idea del fotógrafo como creador, ayudó a poner en marcha una serie de actividades que permitieron en las décadas posteriores, ochenta y noventa, que la fotografía entrara en la agenda de las instituciones publicas y privadas y que finalmente se impulsara un nuevo ciclo de la fotografía española, caracterizado por elevar la fotografía al estatus de obra de arte. Esta investigación ofrece una mirada amplia de la obra de Humberto Rivas, realizada principalmente alrededor de bodegones, retratos y paisajes, y que toca aspectos trascendentales en el ser humano como la soledad, la muerte, el territorio, siempre desde una mirada austera, esquemática, sin condescendencia hacia sus modelos ni sus motivos. Sus fotografías muestran a un autor tremendamente sensible, melancólico y atraído por una belleza oscura, subterránea, un mundo intenso al que se le teme mientras atrae, como la más pura de las expresiones románticas. Su obra, y los distintos episodios de su vida se entrecruzan en contextos sociales y artísticos de su tiempo. De este modo nos referimos a las condiciones de Argentina desde finales de los años treinta hasta 1976 cuando Humberto Rivas viaja a Barcelona, y la segunda parte ya en España hasta el año 2009 cuando fallece en Barcelona. Rescatando las actividades que se llevaron a cabo en el reconocido Intituto Torcuato Di Tella en Buenos Aires donde Rivas trabajó como director del departamento de fotografía durante los diez años de existencia del centro, así como a la actividad cultural bonaerense, al igual que a la escena fotográfica española, desde la revista Nueva Lente, pasando por distintas actividades y festivales como la Primavera Fotográfica y la aparición de nuevas galerías, llegando a los varios encargos institucionales que Rivas realizó en los noventa y a comienzo del siglo XXI. También tenemos en cuenta la mirada internacional que se ha hecho, tanto sobre la obra de Rivas, como de la fotografía española en el exterior. En la realización de esta investigación hemos trabajado desde los métodos tradicionales de la historia del arte: revisión de documentos de archivo, para lo cual hemos contado con el apoyo del Archivo Humberto Rivas, donde hemos podido consultar la obra completa del fotógrafo, más de dos mil fotografías, hojas de contacto y negativos, así como documentos personales y correspondencia. También hemos recopilado información en hemerotecas, archivos e instituciones principalmente en Barcelona y en Buenos Aires, pero también en colecciones en EE. UU. , Francia y Alemania. Del mismo modo hemos realizado una recuperación de la historia oral, con más de una veintena de entrevistas realizadas a familiares, amigos de Humberto Rivas, y personalidades importantes de la escena fotográfica española. |

This research is an intellectual biography of the photographer Humberto Rivas (Buenos Aires 1937, Barcelona, 2009), winner of the 1997 National Photography Award, and one of the most recognized photographers of the Spanish photographic scene of the late twentieth century. The importance of the Rivas report is that it has been a point of reference for a generation of mostly Catalan photographers, who fought since the late 1970s, to give photography a place in the arts. Of Argentine origin, Rivas emigrated to Barcelona in 1976 on the eve of the military dictatorship in his country. Upon arrival, he tuned in with the expectation of young photographers, interested in transcending the documentary idea of photography, and instead, proposing a photograph as a work of creation, capable of manifesting the author's personal expression. His artistic training received in Argentina in the sixties, when that country enjoyed an important influence of the main trends of modern art, allowed to approach without prejudice the photographic image and treat it as another means of expression. His idea of the photographer as creator, helped to launch a series of activities that allowed in the last decades, eighties and nineties, that photography is embedded in the agenda of public and private institutions and that finally a new cycle of Spanish photography, including raising the photograph to the status of a work of art. This research offers a broad look at his work, mainly around still lifes, portraits and landscapes, and that touches on transcendental aspects in humans such as loneliness, death, territory, always from an austere, schematic view, without condescension towards their models or their motives. His photographs show a tremendously sensitive, melancholic and attracted by a dark, underground beauty, an intense world that is feared while attracting, as the purest of romantic expressions. His work, and the different episodes of his life intersect in social and artistic contexts of his time. In this way we refer to the conditions of Argentina from the late thirties to 1976 when Humberto Rivas travels to Barcelona, and the second part already in Spain until 2009 when he dies in Barcelona. Rescuing the activities that were carried out in the renowned Torcuato Di Tella Institute in Buenos Aires where Rivas served as director of the photography department during the ten years of existence of the center, as well as the Buenos Aires cultural activity, as well as the Spanish photographic scene, from the magazine Nueva Lente, through different activities and festivals such as the Photographic Spring and the appearance of new galleries, reaching the different institutional orders that Rivas received in the nineties and in the 21st century. We also take into account the international view that has been done, both on the work of Rivas, and on Spanish photography abroad. In carrying out this research we have worked from the traditional methods of art history: review of archival documents, for which we have contacted the support of the Humberto Rivas Archive, where we have consulted the photographer's complete work, more than two thousand photographs, contact sheets and negatives, as well as personal documents and correspondence. We have also collected information in newspaper archives, archives and institutions mainly in Barcelona and in Buenos Aires, but also in collections in the US, France and Germany. In the same way we have made a recovery of the oral history, with more than twenty interviews conducted with relatives, friends of Humberto Rivas and important personalities of the Spanish photographic scene. |
