Long term effects of pre-natal exposure to maternal stress: Evidence from the financial crisis in Ecuador

Resumen:	We measure the effect of the 1999 Ecuadorian financial crisis on the z-score of height-for-age in 2012. A tax on all financial transactions was deployed on 1 Jan 1999 creating a liquidity, currency, and inflationary crisis. Individuals born after this shock were exposed to pre-natal maternal stress in-utero. We use a regression discontinuity model to estimate the average treatment effect by measuring the difference in outcomes between individuals born days before and those born days after the crisis. We find a significant deleterious effect of this shock on the z-scores of height-for-age in 2012 and propose the increase in stress affects the epigenome of the offspring affecting stunting in the long term.
