Abstract: Environmental sustainability (ES) has become an increasingly critical issue due to the unprecedented levels of overexploitation of natural resources in the interest of economic growth. In lieu, this study analyzes ES from the supply chain perspectives in small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The investigation's empirical data corresponds to 17 and 25 in-depth interviews conducted in Spain and Chile, respectively, with SME managers from different economic sectors. The analysis reveals clear differences between both countries, particularly in the state and implementation of environmental regulations, waste management systems and their implications for SMEs in knowledge, and quality and availability of recycled raw materials. The findings suggest a need to consider the impact of ES on SMEs and to improve environmental regulations in tangible aspects such as the supply chain. In-depth theoretical and practical insights are offered on the supply chain aspect and the link of ES in SMEs, which is of potential interest to a multi-disciplinary reader-base.
