En 1928, inmediatamente después de finalizar sus estudios con Arnold Schönberg, Gerhard compuso un Quinteto de viento con el que abrazó decididamente el modelo de modernidad de su maestro: a nivel técnico se basaba en el método de organización serial, a nivel formal hacía uso de moldes tradicionales (neo)clásicos, a nivel estético se vinculaba al formalismo, constructivismo y objetividad antirománticos de posguerra. In 1928, shortly after having finished his studies with Arnold Schoenberg, Gerhard composed the Wind Quintet. With this work he clearly partook in Schoenberg's model of modernity: at a technical level, Gerhard used the serial technique; at a formal level, he chose traditional, neoclassical structures; the Quintet also constituted a determined approach to anti-romantic formalism, constructivism and objectivity, typical of post-war modernism.
