Resum: This thesis investigates the causes and effects of burnout, compassion fatigue, and physical pain during somatic countertransference in mental healthcare professionals, focusing on the niche population of dance movement therapists to understand which self-care practices and other factors may help mitigate the risks. It explores the prevalence of burnout, compassion fatigue, and physical pain in a study sample size of 13 female White or Caucasian and Hispanic or Latino dance movement therapists using the ProQOL 5 and Numerical Rating Scale, then further examines what self-care practices they participate in, as well as the presence of a support system or lack thereof to provide initial insight into possible treatment options. This is one of the first investigations of its kind to discuss an issue that is of particular relevance due to the increased global demand and interest in mental healthcare (Wainberg et al. , 2017 & Kuehn, 2022). Dance movement therapists, due to the nature of their embodied work in a helping profession, are at greater risk of burnout and compassion fatigue. Therefore, it is necessary to understand and explore its impact so that viable solutions may be provided to mitigate or lower the overall risk.
