| Resumen: |
The inscribed tablets discussed in this paper were discovered during the 2024 season of the Sikait Project in the Egyptian Eastern Desert. This project aims to enhance our understanding of the processes of emerald extraction and commercialization in antiquity, with a particular focus on the Wadi el-Gemal National Park area. This area corresponds to the region referred to by classical authors as the "Smaragdos", recognized as the principal source of this precious stone within the Roman Empire (fig. 1). The tablets were found within the Roman mining complex designated as SKPUS229-230-231-232-426, dating to the Augustan period. They were found 60 m from the mine entrance, through a labyrinth of narrow galleries, in a chamber that connected various branches of the underground workings. The tablets are currently deposited in the offi cial repository of the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities in the village of Quft, in the Nile Valley. |
