El Penedès va ser, durant tot el segle X, part de la frontera sobre la qual es va expandir el comtat de Barcelona, tot fent retrocedir l'àrea d'influència d'al-Àndalus. No va ser un procés lineal, sinó que va estar marcat per les relacions de força entre els diversos agents, que fluctuaren entre la guerra i la diplomàcia. El castell de Castellví de la Marca fou protagonista i escenari principal d'aquests fets, en mans al capdavall del llinatge dels Castellvell, els membres del qual foren personatges sovint molt propers als comtes, fins al punt de representar-los en ambaixades davant del califa cordovès. L'anàlisi arqueològica del castell permet proposar una seqüència que s'inicia amb la construcció d'una torre talaia com a iniciativa contra els primers avenços barcelonins, que segueix, durant el mateix segle X i els primers anys del segle XI, amb la conformació d'un castell comtal fronterer i que, finalment, acaba amb el declivi i l'abandonament de la fortificació un cop entrat el segle XII. |

Throughout the 10th century, the Penedès region was part of the border that marked the expansion of the Counts of Barcelona as they pushed back the area of influence of al-Andalus. It was not a linear progression, but one subject to the power dynamics between the various agents, which swung between diplomacy and war. The castle of Castellví de la Marca was one of the key locations of these events. It was ruled by the Castellvell dynasty, whose members were often very close to the Counts of Barcelona, to the point of representing them as ambassadors to the Caliph of Cordoba. Archaeological analysis of the castle suggests that construction began with a watchtower to defend against the initial advances from Barcelona, followed, during the 10th century and the early years of the 11th century, with the construction of a border castle to defend the Counts of Barcelona and eventually the decline and abandonment of the castle in the 12th century. |
