Resum:	The many well-known images of medi eval construction are full of scenes in which sculptors, stonemasons, and other workers labour collectively at the building site. 1 In such scenes we are shown a clear division of labour: certain workers carved ashlar blocks, others prepared mortar, while still other masons were charged with raising walls. We can see a late medi eval portrayal of the complex organization of a workshop in the celebrated fifteenth-century miniature of the Temple of Jerusalem from Flavius Josephus's Jewish Antiquities, illustrated by Jean Fouquet. 2 In the foreground masons and sculptors are carving ashlar blocks, mouldings, figures, and pinnacles, while a powerfully bare-legged, unshod worker mixes mortar for his fellows to carry in buckets. At the top of the building, a group of masons hoists stones up to the ongoing construction (Figure 5. 1). This image, focused on the construction efforts of stoneworkers, elides the many auxiliary labourers who would also have been present on any major medi eval construction site: carpenters to build the wooden frames, smiths for metalworking (and sharpening tools, as shown in the study in this volume by Élise Morero and her collaborators), as well as lowly haulers responsible for the portage of sand, water, and more; in sum, men and women in large numbers.
