This chapter seeks to contribute to the discussion on how the war in Ukraine has impacted the post-Cold war European security order by examining its effects on countries located at the eastern edge of the continent. By focusing on Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, and Moldova, it explores how the conflict has shaped these countries’ security (mis)perceptions and informed their policy responses, giving special consideration to how they have resorted to geopolitical (re) positioning to navigate turbulent times. The chapter found that the war has produced diverse security outlooks and responses. However, the inadequacy of the current security order to provide tangible guarantees, the ongoing uncertainty over the conflict’s outcome along with domestic political dynamics have led these countries to adopt a cautious, prudent approach. Within this paradigm, multivectorality appears to remain a core security strategy, particularly in the South Caucasus, much as it was before the war. |
