Culture as discourse in podcasts for Chinese as a foreign language

Resum:	In recent years, podcasts have become a widely used medium for practicing foreign languages, offering learners flexible access to authentic or semi-authentic spoken discourse. Chinese language learning has followed this trend, with a growing number of podcasts targeting learners from beginner to advanced levels. Beyond linguistic instruction, many of these podcasts explicitly incorporate cultural content, presenting everyday practices, values, and social norms as an integral part of language learning. As such, podcasts function not only as listening exercises but also as channels for cultural and intercultural mediation. This study examines how culture and interculturality are discursively constructed in podcasts designed for learning Chinese as a foreign language. It addresses the following questions: How is Chinese culture represented in these podcasts? To what extent do the discourses tend to generalize cultural practices or reproduce stereotypes? Are there recurring cultural themes, and how are learners positioned in relation to Chinese culture? Methodologically, the study is based on a qualitative discourse analysis of 50 podcast episodes drawn from ten podcasts aimed at intermediate to advanced learners, all using Chinese as the medium of instruction. Five episodes from each podcast are randomly selected. The analysis focuses on linguistic and discursive strategies used to present cultural content, paying particular attention to evaluative language, generalizations, contrasts between “Chinese” and “non-Chinese” practices, and explicit or implicit appeals to empathy and intercultural understanding.
