| Abstract: |
This chapter addresses the long-lasting custom of placing infant (perinatal and natal) burials inside dwellings in the northern half of Iberia during protohistory. The authors use archaeogenomics and statistical tools to identify consanguineous relationships ("biological kinship") between a sample of analyzed infant individuals from several Early Iron Age villages in the Ebro basin. Genomic results indicate that these individuals had been selected and buried, presumably, for their unusual features, such as trisomies, Down's and Edwards' syndromes or for being twins. This case study demonstrates how archaeogenetics combined with highly detailed contextual information can provide hypotheses on the reasons for different burial treatments and how genetic data can be used to shed new light on the social groupings attached to residential buildings. |
