Abstract:	This paper will focus on the study of masked balls in Catalonia during the 19th and 20th centuries. The Gran Teatre del Liceu organised masked balls from 1848 to 1936. This fact shows that these kind of celebrations were highly acclaimed by Catalan society. The study of Literature, and the reading of one of the most relevant newspapers in Barcelona at that time, Diario de Barcelona, allow a thorough analysis of these carnival events. Moreover, the existence of the Arxiu Històric de la Societat del Gran Teatre del Liceu becomes a remarkable source on this subject. Thanks to the archive it has been possible to ascertain which were the types of dances played in Liceu's masked balls. "Quadrilles", "polkas" and other dances were the most prominent in that time. On the other hand, the composition of this repertoire was mainly of Catalan and French origin.
