10 p, 1.7 MB Continued-Fraction Expansion of Transport Coefficients with Fractional Calculus / Garcia-Bernabé, Abel (Universitat Politècnica de Valencia. Departament de Termodinàmica Aplicada) ; Hernández, Saul Iván (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. Facultad de Ciencias) ; del Castillo, L. F. (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. Instituto de Investigaciones en Materiales) ; Jou i Mirabent, David, 1953- (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Física)
The main objective of this paper is to generalize the Extended Irreversible Thermodynamics in order to include the anomalous transport in systems in non-equilibrium conditions. Considering the generalized entropy, the corresponding flux and entropy production, and using the time fractional derivative, we have derived a space-time generalized telegrapher's equation with a fractional nested hierarchy which can be used in separate developments for the mass transport, for the heat conduction and for the flux of ions. We present the state of the art on the modern mathematical methods of exploiting the entropy principle in thermomechanics of continuous media. A survey of recent results and conceptual discussions of this topic in some well-known non-equilibrium theories (Classical irreversible thermodynamics CIT, Rational thermodynamics RT, Thermodynamics of irreversible processes TIP, Extended irreversible hermodynamics EIT, Rational Extended thermodynamics RET) is also summarized.

Departament de Física) ; Sciacca, Michele (Università di Palermo. Dipartimento di Scienze Agrarie e Forestali) ; Mongiovì, Maria Stella (Istituto Nazionale di Alta Matematica)
We present a review of two thermal duality symmetries between two different kinds of systems: photons and cosmic string loops, and macro black holes and micro black holes, respectively. It also follows a third joint duality symmetry amongst them through thermal equilibrium and stability between macro black holes and photon gas, and micro black holes and string loop gas, respectively. The meaning of temperature in nonequilibrium thermodynamics is considered by using a forced harmonic oscillator in a heat bath, where we have two effective temperatures for the position and the momentum, respectively. [...]

Departament de Física) ; Castillo, L. F. del (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. Instituto de Investigaciones en Materiales)
We study the shear-flow effects on phase separation of entangled polymer blends by incorporating into the chemical potential a nonequilibrium contribution due to the flow. The results are compared with those of a previous analysis by other authors which did not modify the chemical potential but used a different assumption for the stress tensor of the blend.

We propose a Legendre transform linking two different choices of nonequilibrium variables (viscous pressure tensor and configuration tensor) in the thermodynamics of flowing polymer solutions. This may avoid some current confusions in the analysis of thermodynamic effects in polymer solutions under flow.

Using information-theoretical methods, we studied how energy equipartition is broken in one-dimensional systems under a heat flow composed of alternating particles of two different masses. The average energy stored in particles of different masses is seen to be different in both ideal gases and harmonic lattices.

Departament de Física) ; Casas Vázquez, José (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Física) ; Jou i Mirabent, David, 1953- (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Física)
The connection between the Maxwell-Cattaneo heat transport equation and a nonequilibrium entropy is examined through four different thermodynamic approaches, and it is shown that all of them lead to the same form of the nonequilibrium entropy. [...]

A thermodynamic approach to rapid phase transformations within a diffuse interface in a binary system is developed. Assuming an extended set of independent thermodynamic variables formed by the union of the classic set of slow variables and the space of fast variables, we introduce finiteness of the heat and solute diffusive propagation at the finite speed of the interface advancing. 4 p, 252.9 KB Memory and nonlocal effects in heat transport : from diffusive to ballistic regimes / Àlvarez Calafell, Francesc Xavier (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Física) ; Jou i Mirabent, David, 1953- (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Física) ; American Physical Society
The authors discuss a generalized transportmodel including memory and nonlocal effects, which aims to describe the transition of heat transport from the diffusive regime to the ballistic regime. By using an effective thermal conductivity depending on the Knudsen number, they describe in a single equation the behavior of conductivity in terms of the system size and a reduction in the limit flux through nanoscale devices.
