Is translation always an intercultural process?

Abstract:	This presentation problematizes the idea translation as an example of intercultural exchange by carrying out a contrastive analysis of textual and paratextual elements of three translations of Chun Sue's (春树) Beijing wawa (北京娃娃) (2002). The presentation concludes there is a distortion of the original's identity through the process of translation, especially in the English version. It is shown how the ethics of translation behind the English translation silences the author's voice, both the verbal and non-verbal and, thus, there is much less cultural exchange.
