La historia de una visión nocturna en la catedral de Notre-Dame de Le Puy-en-Velay, en el año 1182, trata de unas imágenes sagradas. Un carpintero, de nombre Durando, estaba rezando cuando se le apareció la Virgen coronada. La madre de Dios le dio una imagen, sobre la cual se distinguían las palabras Agnus Dei qui tollis peccata mundi, dona nobis pacem. Con toda probabilidad, se trata de una imagen achiropita. Muy emocionado, el carpintero creó, con la ayuda del obispo Pedro IV de Solignac, una confraternidad de la Paz de Dios para luchar contra los señores feudales de la región, que amenazaban la opulenta peregrinación a la Virgen de Le Puy. El Agnus Dei se convirtió en el símbolo de la cofradía, y se representó en la portada de la capilla de Saint-Michel d'Aiguilhe, añadida y esculpida en los años 1180. La catedral entronizó una estatua considerada divina, o achiropita, que el carpintero había oído hablar diciéndole que buscara la paz. Sin embargo, una crónica hostil a la actividad de la confraternidad desarrolla otra versión de la visión. Según el Anónimo de Laón, un canónigo de le Puy mandó a un joven vestido como la Virgen, que mintió al carpintero; de este modo, la imagen recibida por Durando sería una falsa imagen. The story of a nocturnal vision in Notre-Dame of Le Puy-en-Velay Cathedral in 1182 involves sacred images. A carpenter by the name of Durand was praying there, when suddenly the crowned Virgin appeared before him. The Mother of God gave him an image, on which the words Agnus Dei qui tollis peccata mundi, dona nobis pacem were inscribed. In all likelihood, it was an achiropita image. Very moved, the carpenter established a Peace of God confraternity, with the help of Bishop Peter IV of Solignac, to fight against the feudal lords of the region who threatened the opulent pilgrimage to the Virgin of Le Puy. The Agnus Dei became the symbol of the brotherhood and was represented on the portal of the chapel of Saint-Michel d'Aiguilhe, added and sculpted in the 1180s. The cathedral enthroned a statue considered divine or achiropita, which was seen to talk by the carpenter, telling him to seek peace. However, a chronicle hostile to the activity of the confraternity recounts a different version of the vision. According to the Anonymous of Laon, it was not the Virgin, but a young man, sent by a canon of Le Puy, dressed as the Virgin, and thus lying to the carpenter, which would mean that the image seen by Durand was a false image. The supposedly achiropita images of Le Puy and the controversial story of the miraculous intervention of the Virgin testify to the perception of the medieval man. The construction of the bell tower of the cathedral, its Porche du For (the southern porch), and the additions to the Saint-Michel d'Aiguilhe Chapel coincide with the vision of the carpenter and show the ideology of the Peace of God. |
