O presente artigo pretende analisar alguns dos eixos do romance A jangada de pedra, de José Saramago, publicado em 1986, e que narra a história do desprendimento da Península Ibérica da Europa. Compreende-se a viagem da Península como uma resposta ao sentimento de desigualdade e, concomitante-mente, uma busca pela identidade e liberdade em relação ao continente euro-peu. Ao fixar-se junto dos países da periferia do capitalismo, surge uma nova Atlântida, política e culturalmente unida aos países outrora colonizados pela Espanha e por Portugal. De forma mais ou menos objetiva, na geografia cultural saramaguiana, a Europa não é o lugar natural da Península; mas não é um facto tomado com desgosto por qualquer das partes. Assim, no rol dos aspectos que figuram a obra de José Saramago, emergem questões políticas e sociais, como o europeísmo, iberismo e lusofonia, uma vez que A jangada de pedra pode ser vista como uma reinvenção e representação de um destino para Portugal. |

In this paper, I will analyze some main axes of the José Saramago's novel The stone raft, first published in 1986, as the narration of the physical de-tachment of the Iberian Peninsula from Europe. The travelling Peninsula can be understood as a response to the feeling of inequality and, at the same time, as a search for identity and freedom vis-à-vis Europe. Considering the fact that it is placed near the countries which are peripheral to capitalism, the new Atlantis Veridiana Almeidaemerges politically and culturally attached to the countries colonized by Spain and Portugal in former times. In a somehow objective way and considering Saramago's cultural geography, Europe is not seen a natural place for the Iberi-an Peninsula, a divergence which is not felt with pain by any of both parties. So, bearing in mind the different components of José Saramago's works, we can say that with this novel a set of political and social issues emerge, such as Euro-peanism, Iberism and Lusophony; at the same time, The stone raft can be read as a reinvention of Portugal, and a representation of its destiny. |
