L'ICP és un centre de recerca públic de la institució CERCA (Centres de Recerca de Catalunya) establert com una fundació sense ànim de lucre dotada de fons públics i que té com a patrons la Generalitat de Catalunya i la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB). La missió de l'ICP consisteix a fer recerca en paleontologia de vertebrats i humana al més alt nivell internacional, així com promoure la conservació i difusió del patrimoni paleontològic de Catalunya.
