Thematic Network on Empirical Research in Translation and Cognition

TREC (Translation, Research, Empiricism, Cognition) is a network of Translation scholars and Research groups united by their joint interest in Empiricism and the rigorous investigation of the human translation process, especially with respect to Cognition. These keywords are interpreted as follows: Translation referring to all forms of inter/intralingual mediation, including but not limited to translation, interpreting, MT & post-editing, sight translation, subtitling, dubbing, localization, internationalization, transediting and transcreation; Research/Empiricism meaning people pursuing empirical research (into ‘translation’ as described above); Cognition encompassing all research approaches that study translation and interpreting phenomena and their acquisition from the perspective of the working of the mind and brain.

The aim of TREC is to facilitate research and enhance comparability across studies within empirical translation research with a focus on cognition. Translating is a highly complex and demanding cognitive task and as such has been the object of empirical research since the 1980s. A variety of approaches have been tested, but empirical translation research with a focus on the process / product interface still faces methodological and theoretical challenges. There is a need for validated data collection instruments and established data analysis models, which calls for the exchange of theoretical models, research tools and available technology among researchers.

The goals of the thematic network are:

1. To promote the quality and development of knowledge about empirical research in the cognitive processes related to translation and interpreting.
2. To foster the cooperation among researchers working on empirical research in translation.
3. To optimize the use of methodological resources as well as technological tools to collect data for research in translation.
4. To work together towards the building of the foundations of future empirical research projects in translation.
5. To foster the training and advancement of early-stage researchers in these areas.

The network functions as:

• a platform for the exchange of information, research initiatives, plans and results;
• a forum for developing research paradigms (ways to do research) and discussing the challenges and improvements (e.g., validation and standardisation of methods);
• a pool of potential research partners for research projects and funding applications.

The thematic network is international in scope and comprises researchers who are carrying out empirical research in cognitive aspects of translation and/or interpreting in various countries throughout Europe, Asia, Australia and the Americas.

TREC is an initiative of the PACTE Group financed by the Spanish Ministry (MINECO) [Project title: “Red temática Investigación empírica y experimental en traducción" (EN: "Thematic network on empirical and experimental research in translation")]. TREC (Traducción, Investigación, Empirismo, Cognición) es una red de investigadores y grupos de investigación de Traducción que comparten un interés por la Investigación Empírica, realizada con rigor científico, sobre los procesos de traducción humana, con especial énfasis en la Cognición. Respecto a la interpretación de estas palabras clave: Traducción se refiere a toda forma de mediación inter o intralingüística, incluídas la traducción, interpretación, traducción automática y postedición, traducción a la vista, subtitulación, doblaje, localización, internacionalización, transedición, transcreación, etc.; Investigación/Empirismo hacen referencia a que los miembros llevan a cabo investigación de tipo empírico (en "traducción" tal y como se ha descrito); Cognición abarca todos los enfoques de investigación que estudian la traducción o la interpretación y su adquisición desde la perspectiva del funcionamiento de la mente y el cerebro.

El objetivo de esta red es facilitar la investigación empírica en traducción centrada en aspectos cognitivos y la comparación de estudios en este ámbito. La traducción es una actividad cognitiva muy compleja y ha sido objeto de investigaciones empíricas desde la década de los ochenta. Se han planteado diversos enfoques, sin embargo, las investigaciones empíricas sobre la traducción, que combinan proceso y producto, aún se enfrentan a diversos desafíos teóricos y metodológicos. Se necesita validar instrumentos para la recogida de datos y establecer modelos de análisis, lo que requiere un mayor intercambio entre investigadores de modelos teóricos, instrumentos y herramientas tecnológicas.

Los objetivos de la red temática son los siguientes:

1. Promover la calidad y el desarrollo de conocimientos sobre la investigación empírica en procesos cognitivos relacionados con la traducción y la interpretación.
2. Fomentar la cooperación entre investigadores que trabajan en lo empírico en traducción.
3. Optimizar el uso de recursos metodológicos y de herramientas tecnológicas de recogida de datos para la investigación en traducción.
4. Trabajar conjuntamente para elaborar las bases de proyectos futuros sobre investigación empírica en traducción.
5. Fomentar la formación y el apoyo de investigadores noveles.

La red funciona como:

• una plataforma para el intercambio de información, iniciativas de investigación, propuestas y resultados;
• un foro para desarrollar paradigmas de investigación (formas de investigar) y debatir los retos y mejoras (p.ej., validación y estandarización de métodos);
• un grupo de socios potenciales para solicitudes de proyectos de investigación y financiación.

La red tiene un alcance internacional y está formada por miembros que realizan investigación empírica en aspectos cognitivos de la traducción o la interpretación, de varios países de Europa, Asia, Australia y América.

TREC es una iniciativa del Grupo PACTE financiada por el Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad (MINECO) [Título del proyecto: “Red temática Investigación empírica y experimental en traducción"].
