Resumo

This paper will examine the affirmative action policies at three public universities in
Brazil: the University of Brasilia (UnB), The Federal University of Bahia (UFBA), and the State University of Campinas (Unicamp). Using a comparative analysis, the paper will address two distinct strategies on affirmative action and describe institutional characteristics and logics that may lead a university to selecting one type of program over another. Pairing enrollment data with the vestibular (entrance) scores and average grades of accepted quota and non-quota students once enrolled, this study seeks to analyze 1) the impact of affirmative action policies on campus diversity, 2) the predictive validity of the vestibular as a selection criterion, and 3) academic trends and future needs of quota students (those who have benefited from affirmative action).
