The work analyzes the characterization of King Guntram (561-592) in the Gregory's of Tours (c. 538-594) Libri Historiarum, in which the goodness, mercy and justice of the king become it deserving of the identification as sacerdos Domini and they confer to it thaumaturgic powers. The implications of this image for the establishment of the notion of sacerdotal royalty in the Merovingian Gaul are argued still. |
