Abstract: |
A partir de uma discussao acerca da importancia do conhecimento de Old English para a formaçao do idioma inglés moderno, o presente trabalho busca, através de um levantamento lexical dos termos relativos ao universo bélico no épico The Battle of Maldon escrito por volta de 991 d. C, trazer à consideraçao elementos lingüísticos pertinentes ao proceso de traduçao dos étimos originais para o inglês moderno. Serao apresentados problemas de traduçao do antigo inglês para o inglês moderno com propostas que prezem uma melhor visualizaçao da realidade da época. Ao mesmo tempo, proceder-se-á à contextualizaçao histórico-social da Inglaterra do século X, época de surgimento do texto supracitado. Dados históricos sobre a origen e formaçao do idioma Old Englsh também serao apresentados. |

Through an analisys about the importance of the Old English in the formation of Modern English, this paper intends to, based on a study of the warfare lexicón terms presented in the epic "The Battle of Maldon", written at 991 A. D. , consider linguistic elements related to the translations from the original to its Modern English versions. Quirks in the translations from Old to Modern English will be discussed bringing to light proposals that will better portrait the reality of those times. At the same time, an historical and social contextualization of the X century England will be shown, which is contemporary to the poem analysed. Historical data concerning the origin and formation of the Old English language, will also be presented. |
