Abstract: The paper presents patterns of language use of the schoolchildren who attend one of the two japanese educational establishments in Barcelona: the Japanese School of Barcelona and the Supplementary Japanese School of Barcelona. Based on the data from a small-scale pilot study, patterns of language use of the children in the communication with their parents, their siblings, and their friends are analyzed. Their language preference in the communication media are also presented. The language use of the children from the linguistically mixed families are noteworthy, since the two educational establishments can be taken as a reflection of their family's orientation of language education. Our study found that they differ in the rate of use of local languages: Catalan and Spanish.
