Resum: The present dissertation focusses in depth on several interpretations from the Nineteenth and Twentieth centuries revolving around the figure of A. Argüelles (1776-1844). A series of documents are analyzed, including periodicals, brief treatises, trials, contemporary testimonies, and some anonymous rarities. All these documents sought to condemn him for several reasons, such as his non-religiosity shown in the parliamentary speeches given before the Cortes that gave light to the 1812 Constitution, or his attitude, deemed timorous and disloyal by certain sectors, when adapting the liberal principles of the 1812 Constitution to the one from 1837. Argüelles was exiled in 1814, he was Governance Minister in 1820, he was responsible for the king's incapacitation before foreign interventions, and he fled to England when he was sentenced to death in 1823. During his exile he would write two essays (Apéndice a la sentencia pronunciada en 11 de Mayo de 1825, and Examen histórico de la reforma constitucional), both pieces combining his liberal fellows' defense, his testimony of what he lived through the Cortes, and a singular self-critique exercise regarding the past of the legal history of Spain. After his exile he returned to Spain thanks to one of the amnesties granted by M. Cristina, but only once he was promised that all his partners would also be granted amnesty without exceptions. At the time he would be the Royal Tutor of the queen-to-be Isabella II. After his passing in 1844, odes and biographies continued to appear, and he still received tributes seeking to bring back the spirit of liberalism that he represented. He started the Twentieth century being imagined in one of the Episodios Nacionales by Galdós, he appeared in the correspondence with the Hollands and in the Memorias by De Vega; and after having represented an anathema for franquismo, with the recovery of studies on Ilustración, Modernity, and Liberalism, he was again taken into consideration, this time, to criticize his notion of equality, as well as to vindicate his ideas on justice. This dissertation appraises Argüelles as one of the images of the compelling parliamentarism representing an obstacle to the excesses of the absolute monarchies from the first third of the Nineteenth century, in the light of theoretical objectives such as: noting the dichotomy reason/passion found during the Ilustración, delving into the idea of Spanish exceptionality, and highlighting the tendency for abandonment of theological thought; and also from methodological objectives, such as appraising the different approaches based on the Theory of Concepts, or emphasizing some of the benefits that the biographical method can bring into Political Science.
