Chinese films in Spain : an overview through audiovisual translation

Resumen:	Audiovisual translation has become one the main means of communication between cultures. Even though the number of Chinese films that reach the Spanish audience is still limited, cinema is a very powerful tool to bridge the gap between cultures in China and Spain. This presentation aims at giving an overview of the situation of Chinese cinema in Spain through audiovisual translation. In order to do so, a database of more than 450 Chinese films that have been translated into Peninsular Spanish has been created. For each film different sorts of information have been collected, including three main blocks: first, data regarding the source film in Chinese; second, data on the translated film into Spanish; and finally, information about paratexts of the film in different languages: Chinese, Spanish and English. These paratextual elements include images, reviews, awards, novels films are based on, among others. Analyzing this database, one can see the main trends in Chinese-Spanish audiovisual translation since the mid 1970s until today an help to answer different questions such as: what are the most translated films; which are the main genres translated into Spanish; who are the most popular Chinese directors; what are the main translation modalities; which is the role of the translator; and which is the role of other mediating languages. At the same time, one can also assess the importance of external variables such as censorship, film festivals, awards, images, etc.
