Abstract:	Mi objetivo en el presente artículo es doble. Primero, ofrezco unas notas sobre un léxico especializado del siglo XVIII español, el de la industria textil, a través de la comparación de una traducción de la época y su original francés. Se trata de una obrilla del eminente traductor Miguel Jerónimo Suárez y Núñez. El análisis abunda en lo que es un lugar común para los estudiosos de la lengua española en el XVIII: la profunda influencia de las traducciones (sobre todo, francesas) en la lengua técnica y científica del período, principalmente en el léxico. Aunque es en su contextualización histórica donde esta traducción adquiere relevancia explicativa. Así, en segundo lugar, especulo sobre el papel que pudo haber desempeñado en el siglo XVIII la traducción de textos de la industria textil del francés en la política económica española de ese sector. La traducción de obras técnicas extranjeras pudo ser una pieza importante de las iniciativas destinadas a impulsar el avance de la industria textil de la España dieciochesca al permitir compensar los efectos de las restricciones impuestas por naciones competidoras a la contratación de expertos y artesanos textiles en sus suelos patrios importando técnicas y conocimientos del arte de impresión de tejidos.
Abstract:	My purpose in this article is two-fold. First, to provide a series of notes on specialized vocabulary in the field of textile manufacture in 18th-century Spain as used in a translation from the period and as revealed by a comparative analysis with its French source text. This Spanish translation was produced by Miguel Jerónimo Suárez y Núñez, a well-known and prolific technical translator of the 1700s. The cursory analysis will reiterate a commonplace for scholars of 18th-century Spanish: translations from the French heavily influenced the technical and scientific Spanish of the Enlightenment, most notably its technical vocabulary. But it is when it is contextualised that this translated treatise acquires explanatory relevance. Thus, secondly, I speculate on the potentially important role of French translations in 18th-century Spanish economic policy vis-à-vis its textile industry. Translations of foreign technical manuals like this may have contributed to offset the adverse effects of restrictions placed on the international recruitment of textile craftsmen and experts in the printing of fabrics by competing European nations.
