Resumen: The objective of this presentation is to prove that when translating food items the top priority is to convey the sociolinguistic values attached to them rather than their mere description. Although this premise can be extended to all cultural referents, it is more obvious when related to food since food has a social dimension and is fully versatile: food can define the identity of the characters related to it as it can specify age, genre, religion, wealth, quality or familiarity. Food is also unavoidable for the human being, our "daily bread", and therefore a cultural feature, full of symbolic associations and metaphoric language. At the same time, food is probably the most porous cultural trait and the one that better travels from one culture to another. We will base our analysis on the confluence of these three characteristics to account for the diachronic dimension of the translation of food items. Indeed, everyday language fits in food designations more quickly than normative dictionaries. Since food can be classified as a cultural referent and be inserted in an ideological category, changes in the values of the different social groups that conform societies will affect the values associated with food. We can identify these processes internally within a given society or interculturally, either through fiction translations from distant languages and cultures or due to the need to designate new products that are to be sold in shops in the multicultural contexts of big cities. In both cases translations must adjust to the translation dynamism established by the idiosyncrasies of food.
