Palabras e imágenes

Abstract: How to co-ordinate the tools that allow us to analyse words with those that allow us to analyze images? How to promote the development of a Semiology of audio-visual enunciation, next to a Linguistics of verbal enunciation? After examining F. de Saussure's and C. S. Peirce's contributions to a general theory of reference, the article follows an overview of É. Benveniste's and Lacan's takes on symbolic order and the linguistic subject. Discursive elements of audio-visual narrative are then traced and identfied. Image is seen both as a form of writing that congeals the visual flow and as gaze's memory. It might be said that audio-visual production leads to the elaboration of a new kind of "writing" that frees image from its analogical function in benefit of its conventional character. As well, this new kind of "writing" tends to promote its semiotic value (symbolic) to the detriment of its referential value (realist).
